Tokyo, Japan – 7 Days for Less Than 20k

Back in 2016, I saved 1k per payday and traveled to Osaka, Japan with 25k budget. This year, I again managed to travel to Japan by saving 1k per payday. I saved for a year and found myself back in the country I love most. Let’s explore Tokyo do-it-yourself style.

Here is a quick guide on how you can score cheap promo tickets to Japan!

Here is a screenshot from our Agoda booking. 16612.92 pesos / 3 persons = 5538 pesos for 7D6N accommodation. This is actually for 4 persons but we failed to find another one to join us in our trip, we could’ve saved a thousand pesos 😉 I highly recommend Hostel East57 Asakusabashi for your Tokyo stay.

Hostel EAST57 ASAKUSABASHI 1

Originally, the itinerary I submitted to the embassy was just a draft – the locations were far from each other. Special thanks to my Japanese friend who arranged the final itinerary. Most of our destinations are free of charge that’s why everything was spent on food and pasalubong. We are a very relaxed (lazy and slow to be exact lol) group and really took time in each of these spots. We wake up around 7AM and we leave the hostel by 10AM. Ideally, you can add more to this itinerary to maximize Tokyo 😉

Let’s go!

DAY 1

Arrival in Narita International Airport
Asakusabashi

Tokyo Japan Itinerary
My Mom’s first international flight. Touchdown Japan!

We arrived 1130AM in Japan – just in time for lunch. Grabbed a quick bite at 7-11 first. Bought Suica Card and booked a bus ride to Central Tokyo. The express bus is stopping at Tokyo Station so we had to take a train to Asakusabashi Station where our accommodation, Hostel East57 Asakusabashi is located. After unpacking and a quick rest, we familiarized ourselves in the area during dinner time when we were looking for a place to eat.

DAY 2

Imperial Palace
Kitanomaru Park
Nippon Budokan
Tokyo Dome City
Akihabara

I really wanted to see the Nippon Budokan mainly because of Utada Hikaru’s 2004 concert here. Fandom first you know :P. The Imperial Palace East Garden was closed during our visit but the good part is that the Imperial Palace is surrounded by lots of parks so our visit was not a waste. We then went to Akihabara (just a station away from Tokyo Station) for dinner. Akihabara is a must for anime/video game fans. There’s Square Enix cafe and Gundam Cafe just near the station. 😉

DAY 3

Shibuya Crossing
Hachiko Statue
Harajuku
Meiji Shrine
Shinjuku
Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building Viewing Deck

Of course, a Tokyo visit would not be complete without Hachiko! ❤ It was fun watching the people in Shibuya Crossing, it feels like everything is on fast-forward mode. Don’t forget to time-lapse here. We then dropped by Harajuku to look for the Sailor Moon Store, a request of my friend. We went to Meiji Shrine and then off to Shinjuku – another busy place with lots of buildings and lights. We had hard time finding the Tokyo Metropolitan Govt Building and we’re lucky to have one Japanese student who accompanied us. It was a long walk from Shinjuku Station. I apologized for causing her trouble and she said that it was no trouble at all. We went to see Tokyo’s night lights from the building’s viewing deck. We had dinner on one of the restaurants near the station before heading home.

DAY 4

Showa Kinen Park
Asakusa Culture and Tourism Center
Asakusa Shrine / Sensoji Temple

We saw an autumn forecast on one of the tourist information center and decided to go to Showa Kinen Park which is located in Tachikawa City. It was an hour ride from our home station. There is a 450yen fee to enter the park. We spent most of the day here because the autumn leaves were really beautiful and the park is really a huge one. We then went to Asakusa to meet our Japanese friend and she toured us around the area.

DAY 5

Tokyo DisneySea
Tokyo Disneyland
Tokyo Tower
One Piece Tower
Don Quijote
Roppongi

We went to Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea but we did not enter lol. Mainly because it was expensive (7400 yen / 3426 pesos per theme park per person) and also we need to be here as early as possible but it’s almost noon time when we arrived. We then went to Tokyo Tower – sadly, the other half side of the main deck was under construction so I feel like the ticket was a waste. There’s also One Piece Tower (2200 yen entrance fee), One Piece Store, Detective Conan store and a general anime store. We then walked to Roppongi and passed by a 100yen store and of course, Don Quijote where we shopped for pasalubong, tax free!

DAY 6

DECKS
AquaCity
Diver City Tokyo Plaza
Unicorn Gundam
Statue of Liberty
Odaiba Marine Park

Another must-see in Tokyo is the life-size Gundam! Odaiba is like a city from the future. The train here from the Yurikamome line is fully automated – be sure to get to the front seat of the train to get the best view. There’s also a supermarket here that’s called “OK Everyday Low Price”, be sure to check it out so you can grab some pasalubong 😉

DAY 7

Narita International Airport
Mactan-Cebu International Airport
Ninoy Aquino International Airport

Tokyo Itinerary

Too much airport for a day lol. The pisofare I grabbed has a stop-over in Cebu but I’m not complaining. Our flight is at 1PM so we checked out at 9AM and arrived at Narita International Airport past 10AM. If you have time, you can check the Observation Deck to see the planes landing / taking off. There’s also a Pokemon Store here so if you haven’t been to the Pokemon Mega Center, be sure to stop by here.

TIPID TIPS

Expenses on food will truly hurt your wallet. Find the cheapest restaurant and eat there 😉 They are usually fully packed so you’ll find them easily. For pasalubong, 100 Yen, Don Quijote and those tax free stores will save you thousands of yen. 😉 You’ll find them when you’re not looking for them 😉

Tokyo Itinerary

Enjoy Tokyo! ❤

SEAGATE Philippines RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) Guide

Return your failing Seagate product for a brand new replacement

Some 10 years ago, I asked my computer technician friend which hard drive to buy and he said Seagate is the best. My first ever hard drive was a 250GB Seagate Barracuda back in 2008 which lasted until 2014! Fast forward to 2018, I now have Seagate external hard drives.

When we buy from a store, they generally give us 1 year store warranty. In case the hard drive fails during that period – you can return it to the store and they’ll have it checked and replaced. I have a 1TB external hard drive that lapsed the 1 year store warranty and I thought I was done for. Fortunately, we have the return merchandise authorization or RMA which replaces our faulty/defective product if it is still under the warranty period.

I have returned two hard drives, a Maxtor and a Seagate Portable External Hard Drive. How to replace the defective product? Here’s an overview.

  1. Make sure it is faulty and under warranty period.
  2. Register and create an RMA Order.
  3. Ship your product to Seagate via LBC or your courier of choice.
  4. Seagate will ship you a replacement. Brand new, FREE of charge! 🙂

Let’s get this guide started!

1. First make sure the drive is really faulty. Use SeaTools to check the status of your hard drive. Download and install: https://www.seagate.com/as/en/support/downloads/seatools/

2. Then let’s check if the product is still under the warranty period:
URL: http://support.seagate.com/apps/customer/en-US/warranty_validation.jsp
Seagate RMA

3. Here is my faulty hard drive still “In Warranty” status.Seagate RMA

4. If the product is still under warranty, we can then create an RMA order. Register first at https://www.seagate.com/as/en/consumer-login/ Once you’re registered select “Create Order”.

On the WARRANTY tab, select Manual Entry and fill out the information needed and click Next.

Seagate RMA

5. On the OPTIONS tab, select Standard Replacement and hit NEXT. Ship your non-functioning product to our receiving facility and upon successful receipt, we will send a replacement product to you within 5 to 7 business days, ground service upon stock availability.

Seagate RMA

6. Fill out the  shipping details: name and complete address. For Seagate Return Location, select UPS SCS (Philippines) Inc and hit NEXT.

Seagate RMA

7. Review the information and once confirmed, hit Submit Return Order.

Seagate RMA

8. Now you have an RMA Number. Go to your nearest courier and ship the defective product to the address below. I used LBC and paid P155 pesos only. Use bubble wrap to protect your hard drive.

9. You will receive confirmation email so check your email regularly for updates.

Mayon ATV Ride – Get Up Close and Personal with Mayon Volcano!

Wherever you are in Albay – Mayon is a sight to see – it seems like it follows you. The closer you get – the more mesmerized you become with the world’s perfect cone. The best way to get close to her is riding the ATV! I’ve always wanted to try this activity since 2013. Despite being in our hometown almost every year – I never got the chance to cross this off my list.

I told my girlfriend that if we go to Bicol for vacation, we’ll definitely experience Mayon ATV Ride. Quality Time. They say couples should try new things together right? :”>

Prior to our trip, I have texted Sir Noel (09291932759) from DIY Group and I informed him that we’ll go for the ATV Ride once there. Our pickup point would be at Sumlang Lake then transfer to their base in Legazpi. Originally – this was planned as an activity for two and my family will just wait at their base while we’re gone for an hour for the ride.

While en-route to the ATV base, I asked my Mom to try the ride but she was uncomfortable – reluctant even. She said that she prefers to just look after the kids. Sir Noel said that the kids are FREE as back ride so she has no choice but to go haha.

We picked the shortest and also the cheapest trail. It costs P700 per person and would take an hour to complete. For 3 adults, it costed us P2100. I would’ve asked for a P100 discount but the kids were not charged so it’s not a bad deal right? 😉

Here’s our pictures and more of the story 😉

JACS Outdoor Adventure ATV Trail. Their base is located at San Agustin St. Diversion Road, Pawa, Legazpi City. You don’t have to worry about getting there since they have a van to pick you up in Legazpi City.  They have free WiFi, water station, lockers and comfort room. You can select your preferred ATV from their fleet. You may reach out to them for inquiries at 09957320289 / 09063716374.

Gear Up! After selecting our equipment, we had a brief orientation regarding the activity – do’s and don’ts. We also did a couple of laps maneuvering the ATV at their base.

Photo Op! Too bad Mayon was covered with clouds though.

The trail consists of paved to muddy to bumpy to rocky and dusty roads as well as shallow to knee-deep rivers. Wear comfortable clothes and slippers/sandals.

So yeah – if you find yourself in the Bicol Region – don’t miss this fun activity. I’m sure everyone will surely enjoy the Mayon ATV Ride – from kids to grandparents! Truly an unforgettable experience!

I highly recommend JACS Outdoor Adventure ATV Trail. They have very courteous and friendly staff. Kudos to them for our safe ride as well as for taking most of the pictures and videos! Salamat tabi!

We’ll definitely be back to try the Black Lava Trail! B-)

Albay – 2D1N Itinerary

I’ve always known that Albay – which is 500+ kilometers away from Manila – is 12 hours away by bus. I was surprised that my recent trip only took 9 hours one way! This made me realize that my birthplace got even closer and can be visited on a long weekend.

I’m really not a fan of taking a plane to Legazpi since I feel like the time allotted to prepare, travel to the airport and be there 2-3 hours before the flight is not worth it. I always prefer to leave late Friday afternoon at Araneta Bus Port and be in Albay early next morning and then start touring right away.

Where to Stay?
Since I am from here, I don’t usually spend on accommodation. I stay at my Aunt’s place. Check out Agoda for your accommodation.

Going Places?
It is easy to go places in Albay by riding jeeps and trikes. Don’t hesitate to ask the locals for directions should you find yourself lost (but I doubt this lol) and they’ll be willing to help you out.

Here is my simple and very relaxed purely DIY itinerary for Albay that is very child friendly as well. I’m sure the kids would enjoy touring the province just like my nephew and niece who seemed to have so much energy during our tour!

If you have an extra day or two, you can explore more of the region and add Sorsogon province as well as tour Camarines Sur and Camarines Norte as you go back north to Manila. 😉 I plan on doing this and once done, I’ll share it of course.

Oh, before I forgot, pictures!

Baler, Aurora – 2D1N Itinerary

My office mate Liz found a package tour for 2D1N in Baler for only 2000 pesos. I was asked if I’d join and of course, who would let this offer slip right?

Composed mainly of office mates and their other friends,  we exceeded the target joiners for this package. Instead of 2000 pesos, we got the package for 1700 pesos per head. The package is inclusive of one night accommodation, tours around Baler, van transfer (Manila-Baler-Manila), fuel, toll fees and driver’s fee, entrance & environmental fees. I think the package tour is already a good deal since going the DIY way could cost more.

Baler is or was known as the “Surfing Capital of the Philippines”.  Located just 5 hours from Manila, Baler is ideal for out of town road trips and this place will make you tick that surfing goals off your bucket list easily.

My head was full of surfing. All I can think of was me and the surfboard and the cool pictures while surfing. To my surprise, Baler has way more to offer than surfing! I’ll let the pictures do the talking 🙂

Here’s a quick summary of the itinerary and expenses.

Where to Stay in Bacolod City?

If you’re looking for a cheap and safe place to stay in Bacolod City, I highly recommend Pleasant Travelers Pension House.

Taxi drivers in Bacolod knows this place very well. It is conveniently located in Lacson Avenue. SM City Bacolod, North / South Bus Terminals and the plaza are just a jeep away from here. Some are even walking distance like the Negros Provincial Capitol, Lagoon, Bongbong’s Souvenir and Calea Pastries. There are also convenience stores and restaurants nearby.

We are a group of 4 and stayed for 4D3N. Our total bill was 4,680.03. Each night costs 1560 and divided by 4, each only paid 390 per night. Not bad.

The staff are very approachable if you need help with your stay and they are very knowledgeable when it comes to directions or your itinerary.

Here are the pictures I took during our stay.

OFW Guide for Japan Tourist Visa Application

DISCLAIMER: This post is purely based on experience. I am not in any way connected to any travel agency or the Japan Embassy itself.

Check this video on how to score cheap tickets to Japan! 🙂

I have a friend who works as a nurse in Saudi Arabia and she’s here in the Philippines for a 2-month vacation. She scored her promo Manila-Tokyo-Manila tickets way back 2017 and was worried about her visa. I told her it’s easy 😉

I helped her compile the requirements and here’s what we presented:

MAIN REQUIREMENTS

Philippine Passport
– Since she is an OFW, it shows her entry and exit in Saudi Arabia.

Visa Application Form (Download Here)
– it is an editable PDF, fill out the necessary information and print. Don’t forget your signature.
– if you trust your penmanship, go for it. Just make sure there’s no erasure.
– always put N/A when not applicable

Photo
– Photo studios at the mall offer this. Just tell them it is for Japan Visa and they’ll know what to do.

Birth Certificate
– applied online and delivered within the week.

Marriage Contract (if the applicant is married)
– Not applicable since she’s not yet married.

Daily Schedule in Japan (Download Sample Here)
– the itinerary, day to day activity in Japan.

Bank Certificate
– requested thru BDO for P100 fee. She wasn’t able to get the certificate on the same day though and was asked to return the next day. And if you’re curious, she’s at the 100k mark.

 Income Tax Return (Form 2316)
– She said she does not have this. We wrote a letter explain this. Here is the sample. Edit the letter to reflect your information.

ADDITIONAL

Below documents are really “not required” but since it is available, we submitted them. I believe it gives you higher success rate since these documents will justify you’re capable of financing your trip as well as a guarantee that you will return.

Certificate of Employment
– must state your position, tenure, and salary.
– request HR to put the gross annual income to make it look like a big amount 😉

Job Order / Contract
– Submitted just a photocopy. It states her renewal and she is scheduled to be back in Saudi on the last week of February 2018.

Return Tickets to Saudi Arabia
– I didn’t know she already has tickets back to Saudi. I believe this is a great proof that she will not overstay and will be in Japan only for tourism.

Airline Tickets to Japan and back to Manila
– She already scored a roundtrip ticket back in 2017 so we submitted a printed copy.

Accommodation Booking
– printed the confirmation email from the hotel and attached together with the main requirements. For your stay in Japan, I highly recommend booking thru Agoda.

WHERE TO APPLY

Friendship Tours
– Handling fee is P1200 and conveniently located at 3F Dusit Thani Hotel, Makati City.
She applied on Friday. Tuesday she got a text confirming that the visa has been granted!

SUMMARY
Prepare and submit all the required documents to the accredited agencies. I highly recommend Friendship Tours. I know it seems a lot but if you can provide additional documents to prove you can finance your travel and that you will be returning, the better. Also apply at least a month before your flight so you have ample time should they require supporting documents.

Good luck with your application!

Ligao City – There is no place like home…

It has been a while Ligao City! Lots of memories here in my hometown, indeed: “there is no place like home”. Ligao has changed gradually over the years, but to me, the memories I had in this city feels just like yesterday – as if nothing has changed.

I had friends here when I was little but now I can’t really tell who they were. I can only recognize my cousins and relatives. The Bicol dialect though still remains in me and I’m still fluent in speaking – as if I never left. (this still surprises me lol)

Ligao City is in the province of Albay and part of the Bicol Region. It is about 9 to 10 hours bus ride from Manila. The most common tourist spot is the Mayon Volcano and  Kawakawa Hill.

Should you wish to stay – book your accommodation in Agoda.

Here are some pics during my January 2018 visit.

Araneta Center Busport

It has been 4 years since I last visited my hometown, Ligao City in the province of Albay, Bicol. The last time I saw the terminal was back in 2014 and four years after – to my surprise – is a bus port that is of world class level. The process is pretty much the same as the airport and the facilities and the bus port itself is something to be proud of – comfort, convenience, safety and security – except for the absence of WiFi lol

To get there, just ride a jeep with the Ali Mall signboard or buses with Cubao Ibabaw / Cubao Farmers signboard. The Araneta Center Bus Port or ACPB for short is located just across Ali Mall at the ground level of Manhattan Heights Condominium in Quezon City. If you’re heading to Bicol, this is your gateway. The bus port caters mainly to the passengers going to the Bicol Region as well as Visayas and Mindanao.

araneta center bus port (7)Here are the steps, I suggest you go for #2, #1, #3-5.  Get a number first before filling the form since the queue would take a lot of time.

araneta center bus port (5)Here is the kiosk, located at the left side of the entrance. It is touch screen and self explanatory. There is a crew who will assist you as well.

araneta center bus port (2)As of the moment, there is no online booking and the only way to buy tickets is thru here. Double check with the teller the details before you leave.
